'The Batman' Brings Nirvana Back To Life

New DC film The Batman might not seem like the likely film to help bring a 30+ year old Nirvana song back to life, but this week such a resurrection has occurred.

The second last song on the Nirvana breakout album Nevermind was called Something In The Way, and it has this week made its ARIA Singles Chart debut at #54, thanks to the track being featured at the start and end of the newly released Dark Knight tale The Batman, which opened in cinemas two weeks ago and has already taken $463 million worldwide (as of March 14, 2022).

For a band that hasn't existed since 1994, and haven't charted a single since November of that year when About a Girl (high point #4, Nov 6, 1994) was issued as a limited edition last single, the group's lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit (high point #5, peaked early March of 1992) has resurfaced on the Australian Singles Chart on a couple of occasions, #92 on July 20, 2009 and twice last year; #99 on August 30 and #88 on October 4, 2021.

Teen Spirit was helped back into the Singles Chart by the fact that Nevermind was reissued on vinyl and returned to the chart on October 4, 2021; while it leapt to #13 on November 22 thanks to a limited vinyl edition, featuring a live set recorded in Tokyo, Melbourne and Amsterdam, while the album regained a Top 10 berth at #10 on both December 27, 2021 and January 3, 2022.

This week the album rebounds back to #33 (up from #70 last week), thanks in part to this new song charting, plus the set is the thirteenth highest-selling vinyl album this week, something which is helping to keep the album flying higher on the charts. Plus their live set MTV Unplugged In New York was also pulled back into the charts hitting #35 on the January 3, 2022 chart.

So now thanks to the new film The Batman, Nirvana have their eighth Top 100 Singles Chart entry in Australia, their full singles discography is listed below.
