Triple j Unearthed has today announced Baker Boy as the winner of the 2017 Unearthed NIMA prize.
Unearthed has teamed up with the National Indigenous Music Awards for the past six years and offers up-and-coming artists the opportunity to play alongside some of the countries best performers at the NIMA ceremony, this year held in Darwin on 12 August.
Baker Boy is known as a multi-talented artist, working across rap, dance, acting and graffiti, and he hopes to inspire younger generations to embrace their culture and become leaders in their communities.
As part of his prize, Baker Boy will be flown to Darwin and will be playing with the likes of A.B. Original, Dan Sultan and Emily Wurramara.

“After Baker Boy uploaded his debut track Cloud 9 ft. Kian to Unearthed we were left awestruck. The beats are fire, the hook from Kian is killer and Baker Boy raps with confidence and charisma, sharply shifting between rapping in English and his own language," says triple j Unearthed Music Director, Dave Ruby Howe.
"With a clear passion for supporting Indigenous communities and preserving traditional languages I reckon we’ve found the perfect artist to join the celebrations of Indigenous art and culture at the 2017 NIMAs.”
Previous winners include Kuren, Thelma Plum, Philly, Robbie Miller and Zane Francis.
We recently caught up with Emily Wurramara and Bart Willoughby about the sounds of Indigenous music past and present ahead of this year's NIMAs, read it here.
