“We had to have one sketch about jerking off.”

As Australia’s premier comedy shorts festival, Australia’s Funniest Shorts is looking to take things to the next level in 2017 after a massive effort last year.

This year’s showcase will once again include short comedy films (between three and eight minutes) and sketches (up to three minutes) with the best hour of material featuring at Cinefest Oz this August, before being toured around the world in the 12 months that follow. The best piece from each category will also be awarded $500.

With entries closing on July 28, we had Vulture Culture’s Ronan Freeburn highlight some of the strongest 2016 entries.

“Good sense of mystery with a final punchline that makes it all worthwhile. Plus we like the darker stuff.”

THIRSTY DUDES OF INSTAGRAM (SKETCH)

“Simple idea, well edited and executed. We had to have one sketch about jerking off. These guys have a tonne of other good sketches online.”

THE AUCTION (SHORT FILM)

“This one manages to uses the short film category to good effect. Although it’s seven mins – it doesn’t drag and keeps you interested the whole time. Good comedy performance from the auctioneer.”
