Maybe they'll play 'Barbie Girl'
Talk about your blasts from the past — Danish-Norwegian euro-dance megastars Aqua have announced that they're heading Down Under this year for a run of performances to showcase the greatest hits of their career, which — believe it or not — extend well past the infamous Barbie Girl and Dr Jones.
In fact, they'd already been cutting their teeth for a solid eight years before the former of those tracks made them global superstars in 1997, going on to release debut album Aquarium later that year, following it up twice more with Aquarius (2000) and Megalomania (2011). However, at home, they were already #1-charting artists when the world met Barbie Girl, having hit the peaks of industry ladders with Roses Are Red and My Oh My in 1996.
In Australia, Barbie Girl shot to #1, as did its follow-up Doctor Jones, though consequent singles Turn Back Time, Cartoon Heroes and Around The World couldn't quite match their home-grown success beyond the borders of Europe.
Nonetheless, after eight years away from the limelight between 2001 single We Belong To The Sea and their local #1 comeback hit Back To The 80s in 2009, Aqua re-asserted themselves with a string of single releases such as My Mamma Said, Spin Me A Christmas, How R U Doin? and Playmate To Jesus, meaning that Australian audiences are in for quite the comprehensive show when the long-serving euro-pop heroes make their way to our shores in a couple of months.
