How do you describe a band like Algiers? Some refer to their music as "post-punk meets gospel," others call them an industrial band or say their music sounds like "dystopian soul." The group defies genre and expectations, which has never been more evident than on their new single, Irreversible Damage, featuring Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha.
So, who knows what their fourth album, Shook, will sound like? Going by Irreversible Damage, the American-English band will infuse greater electronic elements, hip-hop, and intense storytelling into their usual repertoire.
De la Rocha is as fiery as ever, spitting a rare guest appearance with the verse, "This a relapse / what it be god / No rehab for my jihad / A rapture in a grief storm / Time on my neck an' it be gone."
Irreversible Damage follows the album's intense first single, Bite Back (featuring Billy Woods and Backxwash).
Shook was born when vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Franklin James Fisher and bassist Ryan Mahan (who also provides backing vocals, plays the piano and percussion and handles synthesisers and drum programming) were in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, recovering from burnout and on the verge of breaking up.

Rather than end the band, Algiers decided to come together, bring in collaborators and create a transformative record. "It was a whole new positive experience — having a renewed relationship with the city we're from and having pride in that. I like the idea that this record has taken you on a voyage, but it begins and ends in Atlanta," Fisher says.
Shook will be released on 24 February 2023 via Matador Records / Remote Control Records.
