More Alex Lahey More Alex Lahey

Melbourne singer-songwriter Alex Lahey might be on her way to an Oscar nomination.

An article published this week by LA Times has listed Lahey’s On My Way from The Mitchells Vs The Machines soundtrack as a potential candidate for nomination, while also citing co-writers Sophie Louise Payten (aka Gordi) and Gabriel Strum (aka Japanese Wallpaper).

The upbeat indie rock anthem featured on the Netflix animated film, starring voice actors Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride and more, earlier this year.

On the song, LA Times has noted: “Youth-empowerment songs seem a dime a dozen, a prerequisite for studio releases with teen protagonists. Then there are lively examples such as this, that feel like they come from somewhere just as the film’s teen protagonist, Katie Mitchell, feels so specific and authentic despite being in an animated comedy about robots trying to wipe out humanity.

“Lahey and company have caught a real-feeling wave here — a kind of sympathetic sister to Grace Potter’s Something That I Want from Tangled.”

It’s insanely catchy too:

On My Way was named alongside Billie Eilish’s Bond theme No Time To Die, Anderson Paak’s Fire In The Sky from Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and more.

The nominations will be unveiled on February 8.
