Entering its 16th year, Adelaide Cabaret Festival has announced another eclectic and massive program for its 2016 event.

This year will see more than 425 artists in 150 performances from 10 – 25 June, consuming an array of venues with highlights that include burlesque icon Dita Von Teese, voice acting legend Harry Shearer of The Simpsons fame and critically acclaimed actors Megan Hilty and Helen Dallimore.

Love Songs will see Kate Ceberano and Paul Grabowsky reinterpret great love songs of the past 50 years and Barb Jungr plays work from legends Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen in Hard Rain, while comedy and classic music combine with Frank Woodley and Tripod both bringing shows to the festival and collaborating with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Co-artistic director Ali McGregor said this year’s event would be one that looks to the future.

“We have made a point of celebrating the icons of Cabaret, and aspects that have shaped it; political satire, songbook interpretation, comedy, burlesque - while reveling in the new and unique ways artists are working in the genre,” McGregor said.

The angle also sees a focus on where cabaret is on a global level, which resulted in diversity among artist origins, while still retaining strong passion for local performers, enlisting 182 South Australian acts.

The 16-day event kicks off on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend with the perennially popular Variety Gala and will conclude with The Last Galah, a show by cabaret stars that pays tribute to Australia’s greatest songwriters.
