Payments up 16 percent on last year

The PPCA has today announced that it distributed $33.6 million to artists and record labels in December 2013 as part of royalty fees collected from radio, television and online webcasts amongst other businesses.

Representing the copyright interests of recordings (APRA covers the composition), the distributed figure – which includes royalties from throughout the year – is up just under 16 percent on last year's figures of $29 million.

Today the PPCA – the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia – were unable to provide theMusic.com.au with a further breakdown of the figures.

The non-profit organisation's CEO Dan Rosen said, “Whilst we are delighted to be able to provide increased distributions to artists and labels, PPCA is conscious that there are still a number of areas where creators, and those who invest in them, are not yet adequately compensated for their creative efforts and investment. PPCA will continue to work hard to achieve fair returns for our stakeholder's creative content.”

2013 proved to be a busy year for PPCA, who while trying to fight the '1% cap' on radio royalties, won a significant battle over radio internet simulcast fees in February. Commercial Radio's appeal on the matter was rejected in August.

The PPCA was in the headlines again in December in regards to a court case against a Melbourne restaurant, who had fallen behind on their royalty payments.
