In a major development following the 2023 election promises for Western Sydney, the New South Wales Government has unveiled plans for the extensive redevelopment of Penrith Stadium.
Paving the way for the transformation of the stadium precinct into one of the city's premier sporting and entertainment venues, this $309 million upgrade is set to leave a lasting impact on the Western Sydney community.
The announcement comes on the heels of the launch of Penrith's man-made beach at the end of 2023 and the news of a forthcoming $400 million indoor ski resort, set to open 2025.
The comprehensive redevelopment plan, scheduled to commence after the 2024 NRL season, aims to welcome sports enthusiasts back with a grand reopening for the 2026 season.
The upgraded Penrith Stadium will boast a state-of-the-art western grandstand, an increased number of food and drink outlets, and enhanced sound and lighting systems.
The redesign is not solely focused on improving the spectator experience but also addresses the needs of players, with upgraded changing rooms aimed at fostering the growth of female representation in rugby league and other sports.
One of the key highlights of the project is the extensive consultation carried out by the NSW Government, which engaged over 3,000 fans, families, and community members. This collaborative approach resulted in decisions to retain the hills at the northern and southern ends of the playing field and the creation of a stadium precinct to the west. The latter will serve as a multipurpose venue for outdoor community, sporting, and entertainment events, providing a dynamic space for the people of Penrith.
Minister for Sport and Minister for Small Business, Steve Kamper, anticipates that the upgraded stadium will become "the new beating heart of Penrith."
Emphasising the importance of community input, Kamper stated that the evolving plans are open to feedback from Sydneysiders, inviting them to contribute to the project's development via their website.
