The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is set to welcome a new theatre space in 2026, and it now has an official name.

“I can confirm that it’s not going to be called Theatre McTheatreface,” said the state’s Arts Minister, John-Paul Langbroek.

He told the audience over the weekend (20 July) that 43 per cent of 5,000 participants surveyed about the new theatre’s name supported the title, while 900 respondents put forward a different name to four pre-selected options, which were Glasshouse, Lantern, Watershed, or Russell Street, per the Brisbane Times.

“The new theatre’s name is going to be called the Glasshouse Theatre,” Langbroek said.

Inspired by the outside of the theatre and its glass façade, it’s no wonder that Glasshouse was a popular title among respondents.

QPAC’s new $184 million theatre is set to open in 2026. It was previously scheduled to open this year, but due to a “number of challenges,” including major flooding in 2022, the project was delayed.

Brisbane Times reports that the new theatre will seat 1,500 patrons, making it 500 seats smaller than QPAC’s primary space, the Lyric Theatre.

Once the Glasshouse Theatre opens, Brisbane will be home to the largest performing arts centre in Australia.

QPAC has a packed itinerary for the rest of the year, including shows such as the Australian rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar, Lisa Simone, Electric Fields with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Lior & Westlake, Sooshi Mango, Australian Rock Collective performing Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and The Dark Side of The Moon, Russell Morris on his farewell tour, Missy Higgins with a special show raising funds for HEAL, and much more.
