New South Wales is about to be home to a new music venue, with the Leichhardt Oval to be trialled as a live music venue for the first time.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne proposed using the oval as a live music venue in a recent Council meeting, which the Inner West Council endorsed.

Soon, the Inner West Council will open expressions of interest, and the process will begin to find artists and organisations keen on performing at the ground.

A pilot program for Leichhardt Oval as a music venue will host two concerts in 2025 prior to a long-awaited upgrade of the space.

In addition to the pilot program, Byrne’s proposal suggests that the design for the forthcoming $40 million renovation include facilities for concerts and other cultural events.

“Leichhardt Oval has the best atmosphere of any suburban ground in Australia, and it’s time for music lovers to experience that as well as sports fans,” Byrne commented in a statement.

“Rugby league, soccer and union players all love playing at the eighth wonder of the world, and some of Australia’s best bands will get a buzz out of performing there, too.”

Byrne continued, “By trialling the use of the ground for live performance, I’m confident we’ll be able to attract some big-name acts who will bring the place alive as a concert venue.”

This year, Leichhardt Oval has hosted more than 120 sporting fixtures, making it the hardest-working space in Sydney. Sporting teams that have played at the oval include Wests Tigers NRL and NRLW, Sydney FC women’s, the NSW Waratahs, and a wide range of school, amateur, professional, and international teams.
