2023 was a killer year for pop music, thanks in no short part to the viral hitmaking power of TikTok, punters endeavouring to curate the perfect Spotify Wrapped lists (not to mention the rise in AI-powered playlisting tools), and huge tours encouraging concertgoers to learn all the lyrics to their favourite artists’ biggest songs.

These evolving listener habits led to some huge moves in commercial radio, with mainstream staples like Post Malone, Ed Sheeran and Miley Cyrus sharing airtime with country stars like Luke Combs, K-pop favourites like Jung Kook, and old-school heroes like OneRepublic.

The former trio topped the list of this year’s biggest radio hits – Post Malone’s Chemical at #2, Ed Sheeran’s Eyes Closed at #2 and Miley Cyrus’ Flowers at #3 – and all three of them have other entries in the Top 50 as well: Malone swoops in again at #28 with his Roddy Rich collab Cooped Up, Ed Sheeran scrapes back in at #10 with Celestial, and Cyrus’ Used To Be Young made a solid entry at #37.

As for local entrants, the first Australian names to pop up are Peking Duk and Darren Hayes, whose joint single I Want You came in at #19. Further down the list, Troye Sivan’s Rush made it in at #32, just one spot above The Kid LAROI’s Love Again. Only two other Aussies made the Top 50: Jessica Mauboy at #43 with the Jason Derulo-assisted Give You Love, and Dean Lewis at #47 with How Do I Say Goodbye.

Nevertheless, the commercial radio landscape of 2023 was packed with surprises – have a look at the full Top 50 below to see for yourself.
