The iconic late career albums of Johnny Cash are being reconstructed live by Henry Wagons and the Tennessee Studs in the grand hall of Hawthorn Arts Centre.
A Journey Through the American Recordings is an ode to Cash’s infamous American Recordings albums created with the legendary producer Rick Rubin. The depth, enigma and songwriting weight of Johnny Cash are honoured by the Australian brooding baritone Henry Wagons.
Wagons’s style of gothic country music faithfully interprets the arrangements and stories behind these songs and leans deep into the mythology and sound of The American Recordings albums.
The show also picks up on Cash’s own tributes to the stories of his contemporaries, including covers of Neil Diamond’s Solitary Man, Sting’s I Hung My Head, Nick Cave’s The Mercy Seat, One by U2 and even a Nine Inch Nails hit Hurt, which Cash rendered as a poignant and powerful recording.
Across the six albums released between 1996 and 2006, Cash’s every syllable serves as both a show-down and an embrace of death itself.
Wagons and his band The Tennessee Studs re-create the sonic depth, poise and ominous force of the original recordings, offering a mythical seat beside Rubin in the control room.
