What?
The Asthmatix are a 3 piece band based in Sydney and Berlin consisting of Micha ‘Morphingaz’ Walter on turntables and electronics, Daniel ‘Weltmaschine’ Weltlinger on violin and effects and Daniel ‘Planeface’ Pliner on keyboards and electronics. Morphingaz, Weltmaschine and Planeface enjoy music by early Stones Throw records and are influenced by an eclectic mix of artists including the abstract thinking of Q-Bert, the diverse output and independence of John Zorn, the sampology of DJ Shadow and The Avalanches, the groove of Flying Lotus, Mobb Deep or J Dilla, and the musical anarchy of the Beastie Boys.
The Music: Elements you will hear in the music of the Asthmatix include sound collage, hip-hop, Yiddish music, klezmer, children’s records, turntablism, electronica and free jazz improvisation. The Asthmatix could be described as ‘21st Century klezmer’ or ‘an instrumental and cultural fusion of multiple influences and lost and found sounds drawing from klezmer to hip hop, jazz to electronica.’.
The EP: ‘GoTeamGo’ was recorded in Australia using mostly DIY methods and was released in 2008 to much acclaim in Australia and Europe. The Asthmatix have now finished mixing a full length album ‘Abacus Earthling’ which was recorded in both Sydney and Melbourne at a variety of studios, living rooms, basements and apartments as well as at Tempelton Studios in Wedding, Berlin and “we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
Members: Daniel ‘Weltmaschine’ Weltlinger (violin and effects), Daniel ‘Planeface’ Pliner (keyboards and electronics), Micha ‘Morphingaz’ Walter (decks and electronics)
The members of the Asthmatix have extensively worked within the Sydney Latin scene, European Gypsy-jazz scene and UK Jamaican rap scene and have collectively recorded and toured with a diverse range of highly respected artists including rapper Aphletik, producer Mocky, Ethiopian singer Dereb Deselegn (Dereb the Ambassador), Afro-Cuban percussionist Bill Summers, Gypsy-jazz guitarist Lulo Reinhardt and Yiddish singer Karsten Troyke amongst many others. The combined musical experiences, tastes and family backgrounds of the band members gives the Asthmatix a wealth of influences to draw from allowing the band to explore another musical realm from within their cultural heritage in which any and all kinds of sounds are possible.
Whilst based both in Sydney and Berlin, the guys have the unique opportunity to be able to regularly perform together in both continents.
Support on the night is from the one and only On The Stoop, another genre bending outfit variously described as a cross between Mariachi, Balkan, New-Orleans swing, Spaghetti-Western, Cabaret, Film-Score, Cumbia and Punk-Rock.
Come down, come all and don't miss this unique night of music from a Galaxiana far far away!

"Just the kind of instrumental hip hop that I LOVE! You giys are creative and push the boundaries in this track. Not just a simple sample, but a mix of carefully placed sounds." - Maggie Collins (Triple J)
