Walking into Ball And Chain, you might think you’ve stumbled into 19th century Britain. The Fremantle bar has a very ‘Sherlock Holmes’-era feel about it, keeping with the old, laidback lounge vibe of the pub when it originally opened back in 1896. This historic pub dates back over 100 years, housing convicts in 1850 before the Fremantle Prison was built – hence the name Ball And Chain.

The décor and atmosphere is not the only thing old-fashioned about this place, with The Bourbon Street lounge attached to the main bar bursting with top shelf whiskies. The side room off the main pub has been transformed into a stylish, rustic lounge area, filled floor to ceiling with the best range of whisky brands from around the globe. The real cherry on top though is the addition of specially crafted ice balls to each drink, giving them a real Ball And Chain air in more ways than one.
And what’s a Fremantle bar without music? There is a selection of acoustic duos that rotate every Saturday night, and when there is no band, the guests and staff are cutting shapes to pub rock, folk and blues throughout the week with triple j playlists for those Sunday sessions.
