Business/Position: RTRFM 92.1, Music Director
Tell us about how you first become involved in the music business and where you are now? I first began with a graveyard shift on Melbourne’s 3RRR in 2007, encouraged by a friend to get involved in radio due to my love for music. Over a period of years I began to get heavily involved in community radio, and eventually became music director of 3SYN while continuing to do summer programming, fills and hosting on 3RRR. From there I found myself doing freelance music publicity for Show Off Services and eventually came on board as a National Project & Publicity Manager at Remote Control Records working on albums from Jen Cloher, Kirin J Callinan, Midnight Juggernauts, Queens Of The Stone Age and The National. January this year I moved from Melbourne to Perth to work at RTRFM.
What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the WA Music Conference, and why is this area important? The importance of community media, independent broadcasting and the vital niche that RTRFM has in both breaking new artists and supporting established musicians.
One piece of advice to help others succeed in the music industry? I think a lot of bands don’t realise how approachable the media actually is, approaching us directly for your music (and saving yourself some PR/publicity costs) can be a really easy way to find [anything] out.
