Plenty of people have paired different foods and drinks to create new sensations, but Gourmet Cinema is looking to take things a step further.

Plenty of people have paired different foods and drinks to create new sensations, but Gourmet Cinema is looking to take things a step further by providing a visual feast to match the sensory delight of your palate.

This March, cinephiles and cuisine fiends can head to the Caulfield Racecourse and see two of Melbourne’s biggest cultural passions wed and the verdant space transformed into an open-air cinema.

For five nights, chefs from some of Melbourne’s most prestigious restaurants will create and present a special menu, with a choice of two to three dishes, to match the evening’s screening.

There on the expansive grass lawn, attendees can view Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel while experiencing Epocha’s contemporary takes on classic European recipes, or sample Le Bon Ton’s smokehouse creations and chill with The Big Lebowski. Match The Great Beauty with Baby’s stunning pizzas, Chef with eco-friendly taqueria Mamasita or delight in the joining of an iconic director and establishment – Woody Allen and The European for Midnight In Paris.

Seating will be on the lawn, making it a giant cinematic picnic, with rugs and deck chairs available for hire and food delivered to moviegoers where they sit – so you needn’t worry about staying comfortable or missing any of the action.

Should the event receive a sequel you can expect even more intriguing pairings from Chefs Ian Curley of The European, Nicola Dulci from Baby and Epocha’s Sascha Randle. They’ve stated that their favourite films are Blade Runner, Heat and Sexy Beast - Across The Universe, The Big Feast, and The Grand Budapest Hotel - and The Big Blue, Shawshank Redemption, Dirty Dancing respectively.

The dish that brought out the full sensory potential of Blade Runner would be pretty spectacular indeed.
