What's your kit set up? I guess you'd say that the sizes and tuning of my drums make it a bit of a jazz-fusion setup. I play and endorse Sonor ProLite drums, Bosphorus Master Vintage cymbals, Remo Coated Ambassador drumheads and Vater Session drumsticks.

Do you attend many events like the Vintage And Custom Drum Expo? I guess you could say I do attend many of them because, including the upcoming event, I've performed at all such Sydney events this year. I like seeing a lot of my old friends and checking out beautiful new gear.

What are you going to talk about/play at the Expo? I'll have a trio with me to perform. We're going to play some of pianist Steve Barry's music as well as my own. In the middle, I'm going to talk through some material that helps develop confidence as a soloist.

Are you planning to catch any of the other performances or demo sessions? If so, what are you hoping to get out of it? Yes, I am. I've not yet met Jackie Barnes, so I'm looking forward to seeing him with Lachy. David Jones is one of my original heroes and inspirations on the drums, and I haven't seen him in about ten years.

Are you planning to get any new equipment yourself? What are you in the market for? I've been thinking about and experimenting with some different tom sizes and tunings over the past five years, and I just recently stumbled upon a combination that really works. So, I'm thinking of ordering some new floor toms soon.

What advice would you give to a beginner drummer attending the Expo? Remember that all the wonderful gear that you're going to see there has the function of being a musical instrument. As tempting as it is to obsess over equipment, the real instrument comprises entirely of your own mind and body.

If you could drum with any performer, who would it be and why? I've been a huge fan of Paul Grabowsky's music for nearly 30 years now. I've met Paul, and we're in touch, but we're yet to play music together. I love his unique melodicism and his virtuosity on the piano.

When and where can we catch you at the Expo? I'll be on with my trio for an hour at 1.15pm. I'll be hanging around the Drum Partner, Australis, and Australian Music Supplies booths, as well as at Jackie and David's events. It's going to be a great day!
