Ascendant Sydneysiders Shrapnel are celebrating their recent signing to freshly minted Brisbane-based label Coolin' By Sound — and release of their new single, Another Year — with the premiere of their brand new accompanying film clip, proudly featured today on theMusic.com.au.
The video lands just ahead of the band's joint single launch this week with their contemporaries and label-mates in buzzworthy Brisbane outfit Thigh Master — this Friday, 26 August, at Stones Corner Hotel — and wears a proudly DIY aesthetic on its sleeve, filmed as it is by frontman Sam Wilkinson (Day Ravies, Mope City, Beef Jerk) on the streets of Sydney. The delightfully home-made clip, which you can watch above, stars the band's members as well as their friend and collaborator Shaun Donovan of fellow Sydney outfit Black Springs, who features on the album as a guest guitarist. Depending on your interpretation, there are some deep and thoughtful messages to be gleaned from the clip's themes and recurrent imagery — or it's all just a bit of absurdist fun. Either reading is fine, as long as you enjoy yourself along the way.
Another Year, which first saw light of day as a single earlier this month, is the first taste to be taken from Shrapnel's forthcoming debut album, Tranceplanetsugarmouth, set for release through Coolin' By Sound this October. The track is, as you can hear, a wonderfully warm piece of meandering indie-rock introspection, musing on the inevitable passage of time while chiming, strummed guitars swell and soar behind heartfelt vocals, and a constant urge beckons the listener to simply close those eyes and let the current take them wherever it may.
Before you can get your mitts on the record, help the band launch their single at Stones Corner on Friday, or at either of their shows at The Foundry's back room on Saturday 27 August (with Extra Foxx, Bent and The Mosaics), or Botany View Hotel, Sydney, on Saturday 3 September (with Solid Effort, Miners and Contrast).
