Bringing the best parts of 90s alt-rock and indie-pop into modern times with a melodic and addictive twist is Siobhan McGinnity as MAGNETS with her latest single Down, the music video for which is premiering on Pilerats today.
While Down is an upbeat, catchy cut, it was written during and inspired by a particular period of political upheaval with Siobhan explaining “Trump was in power, Scomo was at Hillsong, and Tony Abbott had just paid a visit to Cardinal Pell. In the midst of lockdown and my own assault court case, it felt like my chest was collapsing. I reached out to 1800 RESPECT, an invaluable support line for victim-survivors, admitting, 'I'm just so overwhelmed by the news!' The counsellor's response was reassuring: 'I know, it's a lot. The phones haven't stopped ringing."
Meanwhile, the music video for Down also channels the bright, buoyant vibes of the song. Co-directed by Siobhan and Nick Mckk, Siobhan “personifies the influence of the news by donning a handcrafted newspaper dress featuring hand-pleated panels and a paper corset with a tongue-in-cheek, cut-out heart depicting Rupert Murdoch on the back.”
Alongside her music, Mcginnity is a staunch advocate for inclusivity in Australia's music scene, having previously served on Music Victoria’s Women’s Advisory Panel, educated for Full Stop Australia to prevent violence in music venues and earned multiple accolades with her groundbreaking PhD thesis Hearing Injury in the Music Industry
