Brisbane multi-instrumentalist Lachie Greig — aka the mastermind behind Jim's Panache — has unveiled his first single, Call It What You Will, and theMusic.com.au is stoked to be premiering its fittingly trippy video clip today.
The ambling, jazz-flecked space-rock tune centres on a crackly, repeating piano line while wandering saxophones and heavily atmospheric vocals float in and out of the soundscape. Progressively, the song introduces loose drums and other layers to the mix before descending into outright cacophony. It's pretty glorious, if you're into that kind of thing.
The single's video, created by Paddy Geaney, visualises Call It What You Will's underlying discomfort and sense of foreboding, utilising kaleidoscopic filters and shifting footage overlaid atop the unmoving central image of a creepily masked pianist. It's honestly kind of a perfect visual representation of the song's inescapably unsettling yet inexplicably inviting aura.
The Jim's Panache project is still a new concern, having only unveiled this debut single back in March, though Greig himself is an accomplished musician with an extensive history in jazz (if you couldn't tell). He's currently working with a full band to bring the project to life for some live performances mid-year, with first album Wide Eyed set for release later in 2017.

Their next song will be Drag, which will arrive along with the announcement of those shows. Definitely one to keep an eye on if you're a fan of all things weird, unexpected, exploratory and ethereal. If you want to keep connected, check out his Facebook page.
