It’s hard not to hear all the fake news lately. But, this time, you’ll want to listen closely. Queensland skate punk band Fake News is back - releasing their new track, Southbound, today. Written about the mammoth trek between the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast that frontman Tim Russ regularly embarks on, Southbound leans into Fake News’ nostalgic 90’s So-Cal punk sound that they’ve become known for.

Southbound is about Tim driving down from his house on the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast to record vocals for our songs,” the band reiterated. “The songs from our back catalogue were recorded in Darren (Crowe)’s sweaty, cramped, dungeon of a home studio. The music to this song was originally written years ago and was the benchmark of the Fake News sound but we had to sit on it until the right vocals came along for it.

“Tim would be on the road and used the car as his studio to put the lyrics together and do rough recordings and send them back to Darren. This happened repeatedly throughout our time and became a weekend release, a chance for us all to get together and share some good times - this inspired the lyrics for the song.”

To celebrate the release of their new single, Fake News have gifted The Music the exclusive premiere of Southbound’s corresponding music video. Filmed by Jacques Kemertzis, the video depicts the band piling into bassist Nick Vanderkley’s Holden commodore to hit up the Gold Coast - a clip reminiscent of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke.

“We decided to pull Nick’s VL out of the garage and have some fun making the video. It’s a fun song with some great sing along melodies and we are so happy to finally be able to release it to the world. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do,” Fake News said.

Alongside the release of Southbound comes some exciting news from the Queensland band - they’ve also announced a new album, Dead Set. Slated for release on May 7, the LP is expected to raise the bar on the band’s previous albums - taking their sound (and energy) to a whole new level.
