Eora-based techno & electronica duo Hellcat Speedracer have had a wild, whirlwind. Having played a monstrous festival run for BIGSOUND, Springfest, Yours & Owls Festival 10 Year Party and Big Pineapple Festival across September and October, the gears don’t plan on stopping as they sprint into EP mode with the release of their debut project No Chaos, No Future.
Fans were given a slice of the EP through the release of the single Our Friends featuring Zoe Catterall of The Buoys. In a press release, Hellcat Speedracer said the track is reminiscent of a “2010 indie dance banger” that sets the mood for a house party.
“With fuzzy synths and that electro-pumped drums, we wanted the track to feel like you were chucking on a CD in your mum’s Toyota Corolla and driving down to a mate’s house party with the windows down and music so loud it's cracking out the speakers,” they said.
“Working with Zoe was super easy, it was like we have been in a band forever. Our ideas and vision lined up straight away, which meant we finished the song pretty much in the first few hours.”
Today, the pair have released their debut project to the world, providing a deeper look into this sonic chapter for Hellcat Speedracer. Working with KLP, Julian Hamilton of The Presets and Medhanit, the EP is a “bold and daring” endeavour that guides the listener through fragments of nostalgia. In a The Music exclusive, the duo have taken us through No Chaos, No Future track-by-track.
We wanted to show our love of jungle in Ethos. With those intense drum loops, the track really sucks you into its energy. We originally just had the vocal drops going throughout the track, but we wanted to see how we could make it more interesting vocally. This is when we hit up Medhanit to drop some lines over it. Her first takes are pretty much what we used in the final cut of the track. Medhanit’s voice matched the vibe we wanted so well. Importantly, Medhanit gave the track some meaning and substance through her lyricism.

A favourite moment from the whole EP is in Ethos when it spins out into the hip-hop groove. Such a fun section.
This song was born out of sheer luck. We had a session with Julian and 20 minutes before he came in, we decided to have a quick jam and write something. Here the crux of the track was built. We knew it was special and as soon as we showed Julian, he also heard exactly what we heard and we then got stuck into it.
It’s our favourite song to play live at the moment and it immediately gets people’s attention / gets em up and dancing. It also feels super serendipitous, as if you never knew you needed it until you had it. It’s uplifting, but also sad, it’s confusing and yet so simple.
Our Friends came about after we first met at Splendour In The Grass, where we went head to head playing Mario Kart. We then bumped into Zoe again at The Rolling Stones Awards and knew we had to get something going.
We loved The Buoys music, her voice, and her songwriting style, so it was a no-brainer that we asked if she wanted to come into the studio some time to make a track. Eventually, we lined up a day and time and cracked straight into it. Working with Zoe was super easy, it was like we have been in a band forever. Our ideas and vision lined up for the track lined up straight away, which meant we finished the song pretty much in the first few hours.
Echo In The Street is our anthem. As the penultimate song on our ep, we wanted to call out on the current world of despair. It’s angry, it’s fun. Bringing influences of a punkier side, Echo much like Daybreak wants the listener to let go of their inhibitions and just give into their real side.
Daybreak is that crazy energy you have inside of you that you try not to let the world see. We want you to let it out. Fast-paced, high-octane rave rock is what we wanted to get from this. Working with Shane from DZ Deathrays was such an honour. We've both been listening to DZ for ages so it was such an epic moment when he wanted to jump on a track with us!
These two interludes were designed as a breather. Allowing listeners to take in what they just heard and then get ready for the next section. They are an amalgamation of the other tracks you heard through the EP, giving you a hint at what's next.
