Sydney Comedy Focus: Bryce Halliday: SOUNDhuMAN

6 April 2016 | 1:27 pm | Artist Submission

Tell us a knock-knock joke.

Knock knock.

Who's there?

It's your downstairs neighbour, and while the electro-musical-stand-up show you're working on certainly sounds groundbreaking, I'm not seeing the humour at this hour.

Briefly describe your show. I do stand-up comedy with sound design. On stage I have a MIDI controller with lots of knobs and buttons that is connected to a laptop. Throughout the show I launch bits of sound and music as part of the routine and as the show goes on the sounds start to overwhelm the stand-up element. The whole thing becomes sort of a surreal dance party at the end.

What happened the last time you were heckled? I realised how cruel my mum is.

What's your pre-show ritual? How do you unwind after a show? My pre-show ritual is part of the show now that as everyone is sitting down I'm already on stage double checking all of my tech. Tapping microphones, pressing buttons, checking the keyboard volume. If all of that is working fine I'll start tapping on audience members to see if they're functioning correctly. Conditions must be PERFECT.

Usually at a festival the "post-show ritual" is awkwardly packing everything up while the audience leaves so the next show can set up.

When and where is your SCF show? 14 May, Factory Theatre
