More Stumps More Stumps

Sydney’s Jet City Sports Club are currently on the road with trio STUMPS as they hit up venues nationwide for the latte’s Life’s Moving Past You Tour.

Both bands performed a stack of high-energy gigs in Brookvale, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Wollongong, Melbourne, and Geelong, while Adelaide fans can catch them for tonight’s show, followed by Perth, Canberra and Sydney.

The tour comes following the release of Jet City Sports Club’s shimmering new track, Drug Store (Waste My Time), with the band recently joining forces with Heaps Normal to create a special acoustic version of the track.

In celebration of their newest single and supporting STUMPS on their national tour, we had Jet City Sports Club and STUMPS interview one another to talk about everything from post-gig kick-on experiences to STUMPS’ uncanny ability to locate Bahn Mi.

STUMPS INTERVIEW JET CITY SPORTS CLUB

What was your first ever show together?

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Our first show was actually a live-streamed gig in late 2020, we only were allowed 20 friends in person and had to sell tickets to the stream online

What is your favourite Jet City tour story?

We played a show in Jervis Bay last summer and ended up at this kick-ons with a few random people who we met at the pub.

We were told cabs finished up at 3am but when we called at 2am they were done. They kindly offered us to crash on the couch, but we were pumped for a night in our own beds so we did a 6.5km bush walk at 2am through pitch-black Jervis Bay to get back. When we got in at 4am we watched Cristiano Ronaldo get knocked out of the World Cup on TV.

What is one thing that you have learned about us on this tour?

We’ve learned that STUMPS are local food connoisseurs of each tour stop, and can always point you in the direction of a mad Bahn Mi.

What Australian bands are you most excited about at the moment?

Sputnik Sweetheart, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, OK Hotel, The Belair Lip Bombs and of course STUMPS!

How do we become members of your sports club?

The sports club is the friends we made along the way, so you’re already in <3

JET CITY TOUR INTERVIEW STUMPS

Who are the metaphorical bails that keep your Stumps together? (people the band can’t live without!)

There are definitely more than two bails that keep us together that is for sure! There are so many people that we couldn’t live without. Our producer Fletcher, our manager Beau, Jimmy our agent, Simon our stage hero, overall our incredible team and all of our beautiful friends and band-friends that have helped us along the way. Far, far too many to mention.

If you could have any artist in the world remix one of your songs, who would it be and what song?

I think for me it would have to be Four Tet. I’d give him any song he wanted and no brief, and just see what wild results emerged. I love that you never know what he is going to do, but you can guarantee that it will be magic.

How do you guys get into the zone before a gig?

Usually, it involves a few high-fives, a few compliments to the boys, and maybe a Jameson or two. Stretching is playing an increasingly big part in the warm-up zone, our bodies need a bit more love on these longer runs.

What's your favourite memory from the house on Brinawa Street?

There are far too many memories of Brinawa St to have a favourite though. Another one that comes to mind was playing the first STUMPS show under the hills hoist in the backyard.

We put on a little show one afternoon, asked the neighbours not to murder us and played to a bunch of mates in the sunshine. It was a very wholesome start to the STUMPS journey.

What’s your best advice for a band going on a national tour for the first time?

Our best advice would be to play every show like it’s a sold-out room. On the first tours, you might play to crazy big crowds, crazy small crowds, or anything in between.

If you play to a smaller crowd but bring 100% energy, people will remember that and tell everyone they know, and people will be stinging for you to come back.
