Swarm To Be Wild.
Strict IX play Children Of The Swarm at Bonaparte’s Hotel on Saturday.
Strict IX are playing this weekend's Children Of The Swarm Gig. I caught up with front man Tom to get the goss on one of the fastest up coming bands on the hardcore scene.
How'd it all begin?
“Strict IX started off about a year ago on the Gold Coast. Anthony and Nick would jam out in the car hold, where we would shoot pornos any other time during the week. My porn star career was short lived because of the lads passion for their music so I decided to join the band. At our first gig at the Shark Bar our drummer at the time decided to throw in the towel. So I asked John to fill in and he was like ‘Wow, drum for the infamous Helicopter Penis Monkeys!!! It would be an honour’. Soon after we changed our name to Strict IX.”
Why the name Strict IX anyway?
“Nick used to have a German nanny named Helga caring for him in his tender years, she was very strict with him. She wouldn't let him do anything and her answer to all his requests was ‘nein’, so we put the two together Strict IX.'
Do you have any releases? How can people get them? Why should people have a copy in their CD collection?
“We have a three-track demo you can get at our shows, and we've got a song on a compilation that's coming out soon its called The 15th Precinct that comes with an accompanying zine. You need this in your collection. To not have it would be to insult everything that is hardcore, and we will hunt you down and beat you like a rabid dog.”
For those who haven't seen Strict IX play how would you describe your live show?
“We aim for an intense show with lots of energy, when people go to see a hardcore band they should see just that. There's nothing worse than a band who just stands in one spot with no expression on their face, it's like they're getting payed to play music they don't even like.”
What do you do when not in Strict IX I've heard some of you are talented artists?
“Yeah Me and John have a comic with a couple of other Brisbane comic artists, called Phatsville. It’s the motherfucking bomb and ya’ll better recognise.”
Tell me something about each member they probably wouldn't want anyone else to know?
“Nick's my brother, Anthony's my sister, and John eats out of bins.”
