"Nearly every song has started from finding a cool inspiring sound on old and weird devices."

Answered by: Phil Shaw - synth player, music writer, bodybuilder

Where are you from? Australia

What's your favourite thing about chipmusic/the chiptune scene? I like a wide range of styles from the electronic world of music and chiptunes are another interesting and fun take on it. We don't actually play chiptune stuff, but our 8-bit style projected animations fit nicely alongside it.

What track would you recommend newbies to chip music check out as a gateway song? Check out Chiba-tech who is playing at Square Sounds this year, very cool!

What influences your music the most? The sounds I get from the old analogue synths we use; nearly every song has started from finding a cool, inspiring sound on old and weird devices.

What's your favourite piece of equipment and why? It would be the Roland Juno 106 synth, it just sounds amazing! But without a Macbook and Logic to record and edit I wouldn't be able to do much, so that's pretty important too.

What's your favourite video game and why? Mario Kart on Nintendo 64!

What can we expect from your set at Square Sounds? An all round aural and visual assault on the senses as we will be playing a 3D set complete with old school cardboard glasses. Don't miss it!

What day and time are you playing at Square Sounds? 4 March at 8.50pm.

Square Sounds Festival will be held at Evelyn Hotel, 4 & 5 Mar.
