PREMIERE: The Sleepyheads Tackle Heavy Themes On Powerful New Single

12 September 2017 | 2:00 pm | Staff Writer

The pensive 'Never Forget You're Here For Them' features a guest spot from Luca Brasi's Tyler Richardson.

Tasmanian up-and-comers The Sleepyheads are fast making their presence felt on the national stage, today releasing their new single, and debut effort for Penultimate Records, Never Forget You're Here For Them.

The band have pulled in Luca Brasi frontman Tyler Richardson to lend guest vocals to the pensive track, which recalls the kind of confessional, heartfelt lyricism and melodies of acts such as Modern Baseball — through an outwardly Australian lens, natch — and tackles a heavy, important subject in canvassing themes of mental illness.

Frontman Pat Broxton explains that the track "explores the rippling effect when someone commits suicide [and] how it affects friendships, relationships and you as an individual".

"I saw 'Never forget you're here for them, you f**king narcissist' written on the mirror of a green room and couldn't get it out of my head," he said in a statement.

It's a mature and evocative tune to mark their arrival with Penultimate Records, and sets the stage for even bigger things to come for the Apple Islanders.

The band are a couple of dates into their current national tour, having already played Launceston and Hobart in their home state earlier this month, and continue this Friday, 15 September, at the Bloodhound Bar with Worse For Wear, Deluso and Alice Headlam.

They'll then head on to stages in Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne before returning to Launceston for an all-ages outing on 30 September with Squashed Lizard and Off Center.
