Song Title? Reach For You
What’s The Song About? Reach For You is, in essence, a break-up song. I wrote it at a time where I felt like I had nothing left, and nothing left to lose. It’s about being fully aware that the relationship can’t be brought back but choosing to keep fighting for it anyway and the power behind that sort of desperation.
How long did it take to write/record? Writing the song came pretty naturally, all the emotions sort of just poured out. I tweaked the lyrics here and there to make sure the imagery perfectly represented what it was all about. It all came together really quickly. I started performing the song back in 2016 and the arrangement has evolved from there. We recorded it along with my three other singles over a weekend. We didn’t have time for many takes so it ended up being pretty raw — which I think fits the song really well.
Is this track from a forthcoming release/existing release? It’s a stand-alone single.
What was inspiring you during the song's writing and recording? I know, lyrically, I was listening to a lot of Josh Pyke at the time. I had just added a couple more of his albums to my collection and I read the lyric booklets back to front before listening to them. I think Reach For You was mostly inspired by the break-up itself. I was using the writing process as a sort of therapy. It’s a really personal song. We recorded drums first and that really set the tone for the song and inspired the intensity of the ending. My producer, Chris Pickering, played the drums and I didn’t fully know what to expect but it really blew me away.
We'll like this song if we like... Daughter, Angie McMahon, Ainslie Wills
When and where is your launch/next gigs? I’m launching it at The Toff (Melbourne) on the 28th of March. It’s a beautiful venue and I’m so excited to be celebrating the song's release there.
