Single title? Song For Absent Friends
What's the song about? It's a series of autobiographical snippets of various eras I lived through, remembered with gratitude from an Austrian hotel room.
How long did it take to write/record? 11 months from first demo to final master. It came to me almost fully formed (2015), but I'd had the chorus hook with me for 15 years. It took me that long to catch up.
Is this track from a forthcoming release/existing release? Yes, it's the lead single from my forthcoming album, which won't be finished for ages; and it features three B-sides, too. Do people still do that? B-sides. Why not? I was born in the 1980s.
What was inspiring you during the song's writing and recording? I found the courage to talk openly about what I went through when I left Australia for London, and to tell my friends I loved them without feeling afraid that it would make me vulnerable.
We'll like this song if we like… Green Day played at a country pace using the Oasis chords; the Sunnyboys nail Frenzal Rhomb to a sexy-as-fuck Rickenbacker.
Do you play it differently live? More consistency across the board. Multi-instrumentalist David Amzo makes a remarkably exciting contribution on extremely charismatic tambourine that emphasises the girl group back-beat which is less persistent on the record.
When and where is your launch/next gig? Jul 23, Amplifier Bar
