Shir Madness Jewish Music Festival Focus: Alexis Fishman

12 September 2016 | 5:01 pm | Artist Submission

Have you been to the previous Shir Madness Jewish Musical FestivalsHow was the experience? Or if you haven't gone, what are you expecting? I went as a punter years ago (maybe the first one?) - it was awesome. Such a great vibe and so many different acts. I'm excited to perform and excited to hear the other acts!

The Song Of Songs get artists to perform a song by their favourite Jewish composer. Which Jewish composer has most affected you? My show is a tribute to Jewish Broadway composers and I need ten shows to include all the composers I love! Favourites from Broadway are Stephen Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown.

As the only large scale Jewish Music Festival in Australasia, what is Shir Madness' effect on the community? I think it's a fantastic opportunity to come together as a community and support Australian Jewish artists. People are excited to have the chance to see acts they know and love and discover new talent.

Does being a Jewish Music Festival make Shir Madness particularly different to other music festivals? I think the Ruach (spirit) that the Jewish community brings to a festival like this is unique. There is a lot of pride in our achievements as a community and it's fun to celebrate it.

Does anything Jewish particularly influence your music? I'm influenced by my Jewish identity in much of my life and have found myself drawn to Jewish subjects in my performing career too. I try hard to connect to my past and my heritage.

When is your set at Shir Madness? 4.40pm - 5.30pm.
