Adelaide alt-rockers Runaway Weekend have been honing their live show and working on new songs in preparation for Scouted 2018. We chat with frontman Kyle Hall about what separates SA music from the rest.
Tell us a little about the band...
We’re primarily an alternative rock band, though we take influence from a range of genres. We write and produce all of our own music.
Punters will like you if...
I think we can appeal to a wide range of musical tastes. We’ve definitely got our pop elements, although we are predominantly a guitar driven band. If you enjoy live, loud rock music and a high energy set I think we might be of interest.
What have you been up to since the release of Heartless?
Our last single, Heartless, was released over a year ago and since then we’ve been grinding to get some new tunes out. Heartless was a concoction of a really wide range of influences from different genres that we enjoy listening to. We wanted to blend elements of R&B, rock and cinematic music to make a dark song that had a lot of aggression and impact, contrasted with really ambient textures.
What makes Adelaide music so great?
Adelaide musicians like to push the envelope and innovate which leads to some great releases and live shows. Adelaide bands have a strong work ethic which I think stems from how difficult it can be to get punters out in this city at times.
How have you seen the local scene develop in recent years?
Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter
Over the last year or so, the Adelaide music scene has definitely been picking up. The energy and size of the crowds at local shows is getting to a point where it can rival bigger interstate and international acts. I’ve definitely seen more Adelaide bands selling out venues than there used to be.
Why are events like scouted so important?
Scouted gives Adelaide bands an opportunity to be put in front of industry people that otherwise might not have seen them. Adelaide is not as much of a music industry hub as Melbourne or Sydney so it is definitely helpful to have events like Scouted bringing the industry to Adelaide.
Favourite acts on the scouted line up?
I'm keen to check out Wing Defence, Donnarumma and The Winter Gypsy.
What do you have planned for the rest of the year?
We’ve been working really hard on some new music since last year which has developed into an EP we’re going to release a little later in the year. We’re really excited to put new music out there and show how we’ve developed as artists and musicians in the last year. We’ve also got a lot of cool shows over the next few months which should be great.
