Saskwatch UK Tour Diary: Part Two

Day 5 + 6

We had two days off in London to enjoy the weather and see the sites. Our Tour Manager, Simmo, suggested we rug up before we went to see Big Ben which was wise because after four days of perfect weather London came crushing down on us.

Day 7

It almost took us the whole day to get to Berlin from London but, we're pretty excited to be here. We enjoyed some awesome Thai food and chilled at out hotel. The hotel we're staying feels a bit like a Wes Anderson movie and has The Big Lebowski playing on repeat on every floor. We also got a free shot and a brownie in our room which is an awesome sign of things to come.

Day 8

We all got on bikes and rode around Berlin for the day. Simmo and I went to an abandoned theme park by the Spree river. It was really fuckin' creepy and depressing. The guys rode around central Berlin on the quest for the perfect kebab at a place called Mustafa's. We later realised that part of the Berlin Wall was 10 meters away from the hotel. Later in the evening we played a gig at a record store called Dodo's, located in the middle of a suburban street. Dodo's only sells vinyl and it had a crazy collection of stuff from everywhere. They also had a sick heavy metal section located in the store's dungeon, fitted with velvet and cutouts of old German pornos everywhere. Nearly all of us left with some new music to take back to Aus.

Day 9

Today is our first gig in Berlin at Privatclub. But first, Tom and Rob went to the Brandenberg Gate to recreate a picture that they took the first time they were in Berlin. Then, Rob and I ran around doing promo at the radio stations here. Apart from not knowing what was going on we had an amazing time doing radio station interviews in Berlin. Not only were the radio hosts extremely nice, funny and entertaining, the second station was outfitted with a bar and they kept offering us whiskey. Rob gave them his plectrum and they added it to their wall with the likes of Moby and other people that I can't remember. It almost became a party but we had to leave to go to soundcheck and to watch our support PHIA who is a friend of ours from Australia.

Day 10

We left Germany in the early hours of the morning and made our way back to the UK to play our last Aussie BBQ for the tour in Liverpool. As you can expect Liverpool was freezing even with the sun out but despite the cold, we had the pleasure of seeing Sun God Replica and Millions play. Sound City festival was completely chaotic. Even thought we were competing for sound against the other bands cramped in to the marquees that lined the industrial shore we managed to have a really great set with Rob pulling off his signature climb on top of an amp as we rocked out our last song of the set — Hands.

Day 11 and home

Question: How do you end a tour overseas?

Answer: Play your last set on a boat.

For our last day in Liverpool we had 2 shows, one in a record store and on on a BOAT (SAY WHAT?) at Sound City Festival. We also thanked Glen for having us at the Aussie BBQ by literally getting him up! Simmo, our Tour Manager, convinced Rainsey and I to go on the carni-ride 'Vertigo' and at one point (the one where we went through a cloud) I thought I had died. Thanks to local legend Mark Scurr we finished off our time in England the best pizzas of our lives. We have had an amazing time overseas and made heaps of great mates along the way. Now, we can't wait to get back to Australia for the release of our latest album, Sorry I Let It Come Between Us, coming out on June 12 and more shows ahead.
