With beers starting at $3 from 5–7pm every day, the locals are flocking to The Great Southern Bar this summer for their happy hour, which has become quite the institution – and you should probably join them.

Located on one of Sydney’s most colourful streets for nightlife, The Great Southern has been around since 1844 and still resides in the beautiful heritage-listed Great Southern Hotel.

Taking cues from their clientele, the menu reflects locally grown and produced items to set itself apart from other bars in the area. With an extensive ‘From the Grill’ menu, MSA-grade Australian beef is prepared in a variety of ways to satiate your hankering for the perfect steak. Rotating specials keep things interesting, most recently there was blue swimmer crab risotto and Mexican-inspired chimichangas. From pub classics like thechicken schnitzel, BLT sandwich or braised lamb shanks to the slow cooked lamb burger or the pumpkin, walnut and goat’s cheese salad, the menu is comprehensive enough to cater to most tastes.

The Great Southern is typically thought of as a place to accommodate those dedicated to their sports, especially over the weekend (as well as good food and entertainment, of course). However, being located just near Central Station, the crowd has become a hub for transitory guests as well as local residents, students and tourists alike. Leading into summertime, the outdoor area is a prime location to watch all matter of life roll by down George street over a wine, schooner, or cocktail.

Fun Fact

Last year, the bar was completely inundated with impromptu conga lines that streamed around, inside and outside all of The Great Southern after the Sydney Cricket test last summer. Come by this year to see if it happens again.
