The Cooper’s Hotel Rooftop, Garden Bar and Bistro is one of the best-kept secrets in Newtown. This well-loved pub transcends from your homely local downstairs, to a sophisticated outdoor deck and restaurant. Staff commonly hear from visitors to Newtown say, “Oh wow, I never knew it was so nice up here!”
The Rooftop & Garden Bar is the perfect place to go to soak up the summer sun, and once it gets dark it turns into a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of King Street. Downstairs in the Public Bar, you can play pool, catch live entertainment, a sporting match, or hit up the old school juke box.
The Avocado Margarita is a must-try – it is blended with lime, coriander and strawberry coulis; it’s experimental, fun and wildly popular. The wine list gives you great bang for your buck, and there are craft beers a plenty with taps rotating weekly.

The Cooper’s seasonal menu goes far beyond your regular pub grub. Chefs (and cousins) Ashley and Kurt O’Sullivan lead a team that offer up a gastro pub styled bistro. On the menu is a selection of items from a Szechuan spiced squid and green papaya salad, to six-hour braised beef cheeks with tomato fondue and pea puree, and the delicious ocean trout with steamed vongole in caper butter sauce, just to name a few. Cooper’s is also big on tapas – some favourites include house-made pork and chive dumplings, or pork, fennel and apple sausage rolls in tomato chutney. So many winning dishes on offer; you’ll want to try as many as you can!
