Finally Returning To Australia, Faithless Are Paying Homage To The Beloved Maxi Jazz While Looking To The Future

PREMIERE: Thom Lion - Mess At Best

Having spent much of the past year working on it, Adelaide musician/producer Thom Lion is understandably keen to start sharing his new EP, Mess At Best, but with a couple of months left to go before we're likely to see the full work out in the world, The Music is stoked to be premiering the video for the release's title track today.

The track was released as a single in mid-February, enjoying a live launch at Adelaide's Fringe Festival early last month, and the new clip, shot by Markus Strack and directed by Tom Bourne and Jessica Braithwaite, places Lion in an industrial-looking room at the Port Adelaide Emporium with dancer Courteney Lee and an assortment of paints, letting the pair get messy and dance out their issues. In the background, Lion's catchy, upbeat, synth-dappled tune evokes acts such as Arcade Fire and Cold War Kids as he stands defiant and lyrically cautions, "I'm a mess at bestbut, baby, this is who I am".

"I wrote the hook for this on my home piano a few years ago, didn't touch it until a month out from recording and the words and song came out really quickly," Lion explained in a statement of the track's inception. "Took it to the guys and no one was really sure about it, we almost didn't record it until the producer, John [Castle — Cub Sport, Vance Joy, Josh Pyke], told us to give it a crack!

"I then came back from Melbourne and scrapped the vocals, re-did them at home to get the vibe right. It's about sometimes being a mess even at the best of times — but pleading with your loved one that it's part of the package, good and bad."

Thom Lion's forthcoming EP will be released mid-this year.
