PREMIERE: Syrup, Go On - Melt Thru

Emergent Gold Coast post-punk outfit Syrup, Go On have been quietly eking out a niche for themselves in south-east Queensland's vibrant DIY indie scene for a couple of years now, albeit in a couple of different forms.

Originally called Young Pros, the band started as the project of Tom and Kris Briese before blossoming into a three-piece with the addition of drummer Ken Kimura. Citing influences from Joy Division and The Clean to DEAFCULT and Blank Realm, the band kept the name until at least April last year before reinventing themselves under their current moniker.

With fourth member Liz Dick consequently added to the ranks, as Syrup, Go On, the quartet have honed their talents for crafting tidy, infectious indie-pop-leaning jams in bedroom studios and stages between Brisbane and the GC to have ultimately released their three-track debut EP, Translucent Lucid Trance, in July last year.

In true slacker style (hey, no judgment; in fact, it's kind of nice to see this level of commitment to an aesthetic), the band are only just starting to properly follow it up now, starting with the video for EP opener Melt Thru, which we're stoked to be premiering today. Filmed by Kimura and produced by the band, the clip brings together at-home footage, youthful apathy and some carefree fireside dancing to accompany the tune, itself a well-rounded, accessible and catchy tune that seemingly revels in its inescapable SEQ origins.

In the immortal words of Ghostbusters II's New York dockworker suddenly dealing with the arrival of the ghostly Titanic (and as we seem to be saying a bit lately): well, better late than never.

At any rate, they've been squirrelled away working on their next release since last month, and from the sounds of things all is progressing well on that front. However, the band did advise earlier this week that Kimura has moved to Sydney to pursue "a real job" (pfft, whatever that means), so it remains to be seen what comes next for the up-and-comers from here — but if they stay on track, you should expect to be hearing more from Syrup, Go On over the coming months. And that would be fittingly sweet indeed.

Syrup, Go On don't have any impending gigs locked in at the moment, but you can connect with them on Facebook to make sure you're on top of it when they next step out for a show.
