Stalwart Brissy rockers Old Fashion recently teased the forthcoming release of a new EP with fresh single Romeo, the clip for which is proudly premiering with The Music today.
The riff-driven rock'n'roll luminaries are still riding high from their recent east coast tour in support of previous single Stuck In A Groove, with the band returning to Loose Stones Studio to write and record more material, with the engineering assistance of Zac Hylton. With the mixing talents of Matt Bartlem (Dead Letter Cirucs, The Getaway Plan, Matt Corby) thrown into the mix — as well as the odd tinkling on keyboards for the release — the EP remains an unknown quantity, but one we're keen to get our hands on and unravel.
The clip for Romeo takes place at one of the weirder house parties we've seen depicted in these circumstances, utilising the round-table camera-shot technique mastered by the opening credits of Roseanne to introduce us to a revolving door of guests, including must-have types such as 'guy engaging in animated conversation with blow-up sex doll', 'man necking entire bottle of wine at the table' and 'actual barber'.
It's a super-fun, simple-but-effective clip — and the timing between song and video is impeccable (that choral-vocal drop at the end is a fantastic touch).
"We shot this in a friend's garage, and pretty much just threw a party," the band explain of making the clip. "We know its cliche, but it works, supply the alcohol and the people will come — especially us. We thought it would just be a funny film clip — filming obscure scenes of a bunch of silly-billies being silly."
Romeo was shot and directed by John Skillington of Blueroom Productions. Although the band came up with the concept, they were aware of their limitations, instead choosing to defer to Skillington's guidance as the video came together:
"We are good friends with John Skillington — which was important at times, as he often needed to wrangle us like a bunch of school children — especially towards the end of the shoot when everyone was getting quite boozed," they said. "John worked really hard on it, and came up with how we could film it on a rotating camera, and how we needed to time everything to make sure it flowed — we never would have thought of that kind of mumbo jumbo technical stuff."
Romeo is out now. Old Fashion's forthcoming EP is due for release this year. To find out more about the band, hit up their Facebook page.
