Melburnian electro-pop three-piece Native Spirit are set to continue asserting themselves as a must-watch emergent musical force, following up last year's buzzworthy debut single In My Head with the single and video release of Look Around, proudly premiering on The Music today.
Taken from the band's forthcoming EP, due to be released later this year, the track — and its clip — builds on where In My Head left off, juxtaposing retro vibes with contemporary flushes. Neon '80s palettes and VHS glitches stand against the presence of smartphones and sophisticated programming, the song itself straddling at least two sonic realms while its video's narrative relays the journey of a young couple on a night on the town.
"We were driven to produce something that provided some contrast to In My Head, a track that was consistent but not one that would pigeonhole us," Asher Takle — who formed the band with his brothers Jonathan and Daniel — said in a statement. "Something that allowed us to expand both sonically and lyrically … we think Look Around achieved that."
