Following on from Enemies and Sorry, the duo's latest single arrives as they play BIGSOUND next month..
Over the last twelve months, one project we've found ourselves falling head over heels for is Sydney dream-pop duo EGOISM. Within this time, they've consistently risen from strength to strength with every move they make, whether it be Sorry at the tail-end of last year, or Enemies, which as their first song of 2019, tackled mental health and complicated feelings: "Enemies is really just about mental health and how it can affect the people you love," the duo's Olive Rush explained on release. They're blossoming into cult-favourites within a growing dream-pop/shoegaze-esque space in Australia and it's something we don't see slowing down, especially with their latest single What Are We Doing?
What Are We Doing? is a multi-faceted return from the pairing that places saccharine melodies side-by-side with bittersweet melodies, lifting you up and then dimming things back down again as the single's swirling melodies meet dueting vocals and gentle stirs. "This song is literally about making music with each other; but really it’s about letting out all the little worries you keep to yourself, and then taking a deep breath and realising ‘you and I, we don’t know what the fuck that we’re doing with this’," explains Olive on the single's theme, which is something you really gotta listen closely for, as it's seemingly disguised by soft, slightly-sun-stroked chords and the rhythms that keep it in pace. "It can apply to our entire relationship, and to any relationship between two people really."
What Are We Doing? makes it three-from-three for EGOISM and it's yet another sign that they're a band teetering on the edge of a national break-out, creating something special with ever muffled guitar strum and cut-through breath.
