PREMIERE: Darling James - God's Graffiti

Luminous Melburnian indie-electro-pop inventor Darling James capped off 2016 with the release of his debut EP, Theory Of Mind, a tidy and tasty six-track collection of tunes that he's all set to launch early next month with the help of a few friends.

Before he does, though, Darling James — aka James O'Brien, one-time frontman of The Boat People — has generously provided The Music with a premiere look at the simple but clever clip for EP cut God's Graffiti.

The sweet new tune joins previously released efforts and EP brethren such as Ultimatum Talk and The Itch in the man's growing oeuvre of infectious yet intelligent pop, and its ever-shifting visuals come courtesy of a creative collaboration with director Luke Constable.

The primary trick behind the video was an effective, if probably wildly dangerous, process of quite literally putting a camera on top of an empty car and then letting it roll down "a slight incline" — a move that required Constable and O'Brien to frequently hop in and out of the vehicle to course-correct, lest it veer onto any nearby pedestrian or cyclist paths. Or train tracks. Or buildings. Or other cars, probably.

Are we sure this wasn't an insurance nightmare? It sounds like it would have been an insurance nightmare. Either way, though, it turned out a real treat, and the tune itself is massively enjoyable to boot.

If you'd like to hear it and more in the flesh, Darling James (with full band) will be launching Theory Of Mind at the Gasometer on Thursday 9 February. Support comes from Frida and Creature Fear.
