Rise and grind, The Sauga City Killer's given us a heap of new stuff to listen to..
It’s a case of OVO-load this week – following Drake’s Beyonce collab, resident OVO label smoothie PARTYNEXTDOOR premiered seven new tracks and a freestyle – esssentially an EP’s worth – on the OVO Sound Radio Show. This is the first official project form from the Toronto-based singer-producer since December’s Travi$ Scott and Ca$h Out-featuring mixtape PNDColours.
As usual, PND doesn’t disappoint, offering a real mixed bag skirting on the edges of his electronic/R & B style here - amongst the collection there’s strip-club rap, woozy cloud rap and a freestyle. A few romantic R & B ones but no huge seductive jams like Recognize. The pick of the litter so far is Codeine Bumpin, a murky, minimal number with a trap beat, with PND holding back on his singing voice for some more Future-inspired, far-off sounding vocal warbling.
We’re not sure where these songs will end up (a PARTYNEXTDOORTHREE mixtape? Or the Mississauga, Ont. forthcoming album?) but it’s good to see PND is making himself heard – with any luck, he’ll rise up something big like Drake’s other co-sign with a similar sound, The Weeknd, has. Although in his recent FADER cover story, PND expressed his dismay over the comparisons: "People throw that [Weeknd comparison] over me because I came at a time where people assumed I was there to fill a void."
Listen to a couple of our favourites via some rips below - the full radio episode mix containing all the songs (and a few throwback hip hop party classics!) is on his Soundcloud and also below for you. PND mixed the show alongside OVO producer Boi-1da, who was the first one PND sent his music to and whose been backing him since day dot.
