With two EPs to their name (2010’s self-titled and 2011’s Mermaids & Other Sirens) and an infamous live show that landed them two nominations for Best Live Act at FBi’s SMAC Awards, Island Records newest signing JINJA SAFARI have delivered a their debut record which is out now!
JINJA SAFARI, the debut album, is 12 postcards from a fantastical pop world – a multiculturally inspired sound, spearheaded by effervescent frontman Marcus Azon and collaborator / producer Pepa Knight.
“Because we’re so heavily influenced by world music it was important for us to visit places, and reflect as much of that back into our music,” says Marcus of the album’s focus. So over the past 18 months, Marcus and Pepa travelled to India, Cambodia, Indonesia, the UK, the US, Germany and Canada for inspiration – and, of course, Uganda, home to the town which inspired the outfit’s name. “All of those places were a really important part of creating this album,” says Marcus. “We wanted it to be authentic – not just an outsider’s perspective. There’s a lot of stories here.”
Taken from the record and at radio today, the latest single ‘Plagiarist’ is one of those stories.

"The guitar line is a reference to the bridge pick up Afro beat riffs that you hear bumbling out of Trucks all over Uganda. Lyrically its based around a few stories, but I think everyone can relate to the situation where you are in a social environment and an Ex girlfriend/ Ex Flame turns up. Then maybe you see them at Uni, and sit behind them accidentally at a lecture. Or you run into them at the super market. And again at the cafe.
It’s not because you are following them, it’s just because your lives were so entangled with the same friends and same routines. And despite how hard you try, you start to notice who they are talking to, which fella is trying to pick her up, which friends are introducing her to new guys and buying her shots. It’s a lot easier if you break up to move to the other side of the world, rather than the other side of the street” explains Marcus.
