What made you want to get involved with Newtown Festival Week? It's a great way of letting people know about the work we do with asylum seekers, refugees and recent arrivals to Australia.

What is it about Newtown that makes it a great place to hold events or have a business there? People in Newtown are open to ideas, you can create things and it will find an audience. Our place is so unusual, outside of Paris or Shanghai; Newtown is the only place it would work.

How would you describe Newtown to someone who hasn't been there before? Newtown is everything that a mass media, for-profit corpratist consumerist is not. Newtown is weird, it's unconventional. It's a sanctuary, a place where you're not judged. It's open, accepting and tolerant.

What ways do you think Newtown could be improved? We need to rip up King St and turn it into a canal. Just imagine how great this place would be if instead of cars we had rowboats.

What are you doing to celebrate Newtown Festival week? Showcase some of the food made by the asylum seekers, refugees and recent arrivals to Australia — they cook for us the way they cook back in their homelands. It's amazing.
