Ryan Hemsworth stopped off at Brown Alley in Melbourne as part of his Australian Tour with the wonderful Kaytranada. This is what happened.
When I found out I was getting the opportunity to review the KAYTRANADA and RYAN HEMSWORTH gig I was ecstatic. Two of my favourite artists and more under one roof...
Now that I've experienced it however - I'm a little worried. The night was a true experience of amazing producers and if you missed the gig but get another opportunity to see any of the people I'm about to mention perform again - take my advice, drop everything and do it.
Now as a huge fan of RYAN HEMSWORTH I was already on the verge of grabbing his face and licking him before he even got on stage. So the fact that SILENT JAY was absolutely KILLING it, was a welcomed distraction. He played exceptionally and I was amazed that I hadn't heard of this Melbourne based talent before.
PACES aka Mikey Perry, half of the well known SURECUT KIDS duo was there doing his solo thang and MAN did he deliver. I lost my head, mind and body all at once when he played 'Hey Sippy', my favourite love song of 2013, and the dedication to his girlfriend half way through was a super cute touch. Also a much anticipated listen was his '1 2 step' bootleg which had me (and the rest of the crowd...I hope) doing an awful impression of Missy Elliot shaking it like jello and making the boys say "hello". An honourable mention to this man for playing so hard his fingers were bleeding over everything by the time he wrapped up.
For a HEMSWORTH gig I thought it had a little bit more of a trap vibe then I had imagined - but I was won over by probably my favourite mix I've seen live, of all time - OUTKAST's 'Ghettomusick' with his own hit 'Perfectly'. Beyond impressed by now, when he dropped GESTAFFELSTIEN's 'Pursuit' it just seemed like this guy was an unstoppable force with magic hands.
I spotted my jaw somewhere downstairs and asked if someone could throw it back up to me and one kind stranger was nice enough to oblige. After composing myself and my jaw to a degree (and checking if there was an opportunity for me to lick RYAN's face when he got off stage - sadly not), KAYTRANADA graced the stage and my jaw went missing again almost instantly. Opening with a funky number that went into a rad cover of FLUME's 'Holding On', he continued to deliver hit after hit and by the end of it my bones were tired and my head was throbbing but I didn't care because I was still dancing and it had me - in the words of the legend GWEN STEFANI - feeling hella good so I just kept on dancing.
DJEMBA DJEMBA and MR CARMACK rocked the house hard with their shared hour and a half together. Mikey was not the only person bleeding by the end of the night - even the kids smoking ciggies in the corner all night got into it and everyone was packed in like sardines, pushing for a glorious front stage position right 'til the end.
It was a beautiful night full of blood, sweat and tears and everything else you could possibly want in a gig. I give it an A+++, but then really, what else can you expect from an Espionage gig? Those guys know how to party right. Perth and Sydney - THESE GUYS ARE STILL COMING FOR YOU - I recommend you either buy a ticket or start digging your grave now because missing out on this one surely has a fate worse than death.
