'I Wanted My Album To Feel Bigger Than Just Music': Charley On 'The Chronicles Of A Serial Idealist'

Leaps & Bounds: Black Vanilla

When did you start making music and why? We started making music in mid-2011 because we wanted to make music to dance to. Also, we all separately wanted to have a live music project outside the other recorded music we made (Collarbones, Guerre).

Sum up your musical sound in four words? Stark dank yuck drums.

What other events/gigs are you looking forward to at Leaps & Bounds? On browsing the program, I was excited to see drone doom legends Earth playing. Turns out it’s a different band called Earth. Common name, huh. I’ll say the Rice Is Nice showcase.

What do you think is the best thing about a festival like Leaps & Bounds? Anything that’ll get people off their butts and into a live performative experience is good for the world, especially during winter. Sydney needs more things like this – someone’s gotta export it up here.

What are your favourite places to hang out in the City of Yarra and why? Last time I was in Melbourne, I walked into a drag bar. The place was really small and kinda tacky. There’s nothing like that in Sydney. I’ve since found out it was called The 86.

Why should people come and see your band at Leaps & Bounds? Firstly, we do our best to melt people’s faces off, but mostly the line-up is incredible: HTMLflowers, Habits, Felicity Yang.

When and where for your Leaps & Bounds gig? 17 Jul at Evelyn Hotel.
