A couple of months back we included a song by Pacific Heights in THIS little post containing a few chilled out gems, and this week saw the release of a new single, which comes with an incredible video clip, so we figured it was time to get to know the guy a little better before his debut album comes out this May.
Tell us about about yourself?
Hello, I’m Devin Abrams AKA Pacific Heights. I live in Wellington New Zealand. I play quite a few different instruments from saxophone (which I studied at Jazz School), to piano and love just about all forms of music.
What kinda tunes we talkin’?
Deep, vintage sounding electronic music. I have a long history/passion for early electronic music – techno/jungle/ambient etc and have always tried to nod to those genres within my own music.
Production/writing process:
Usually starts with a few hours going round in circles, which turn into days until I have sat on something I think is good enough. From there I will flesh out an idea and usually mix as I go. With vocal tracks, I tend to use placement vocals (my own) as an experiment to see if vocals add or subtract from an idea.
What do you do outside of Pacific Heights?
I produce and write for other acts ranging from indie to major label acts. I also lecture at a new music degree in Wellington. I absolutely love travelling when I can afford it haha.
Any shows coming up?
At this stage still trying to put the live show together – I have a little three piece act. So only a couple of NZ shows so far to road test first.
And releases?
My full album will be coming out May 27th, something I’m extremely excited for. The album was nearly two years in the making…
What’s the rest of the year have in store?
More studio time, more teaching, some travelling and hopefully getting the band to Australia!
