Introducing Destiny Rogers and her shimmering debut EP, Tomboy

With the accessibility we have to an ever-growing music scene, it's challenging to keep on top of the up-and-coming stars of tomorrow; hell, we even struggle to keep up with Australia's next big things. In saying that, however, there's been a tonne of brilliant names arrive over the last twelve months or so that we've been dying to tell the world about, particularly in the US R&B/hip-hop world. Much like it is in Australia, the US' hip-hop world is undergoing a transformation, diversifying in both sound and image through forward-thinkers like Megan Thee Stallion and Tierra Whack, while on a more relaxed note, the R&B world is blossoming too through acts like Mahalia, Jessie Reyez and Ella Mai; neither of which have really made the jump to Australian audiences despite solid placement internationally.

California's Destiny Rogers incorporates parts of the latter with her own soundscape, combining woozy R&B with hooks you'd expect from a big-name pop feature; soft haziness you'd expect from a shimmering indie-pop track, and influences from her younger years - her Mexican mom listened to Mariachi music and her dad listened to AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd - to create a well-rounded and unique sound that can only be described as Destiny Rogers. Her debut EP Tomboy accumulates years of hard work and focus into a slick, five-track release that showcases these sounds and the many facets it takes; all assisted in production by The Stereotypes - an R&B production crew who count tracks by Mary J Blige, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars in their production discography.

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Destiny Rogers. I’m a singer, songwriter, musician, and skateboarder from Lodi, CA.

What’s the vibe music-wise?

R&b/Pop.

What are your production and writing processes like?

For production, my guys The Stereotypes always cook up something fire every time. We start off just by talking and seeing what ideas we come up with and work off the energy in the room. Once they make a fire production, I go in the booth and freestyle melodies over the track. Then we pick and choose which ones we want and place them in the right pocket. Once that's done, then we start writing the lyrics.

Can you tell us about your latest EP, Tomboy?

Tomboy has been in the works for the last two years. After going through heartbreaks, relationships, and other experiences that happened in my life over those two years, those records were the ones I wanted to show the world. So anyone can listen to the EP and have a song they can relate to.

Any tour dates coming up?

Not as of right now. But eventually gonna go on tour ASAP.

What does 2019 have in store for you?

A bunch of more music, shows, and more travelling so I can meet all of my supporters in person.
