'We Were Inspired To Get Loud': Silversun Pickups On 'Tenterhooks' & Their Long-Awaited Return To Australia

Have You Heard: The Lalibelas

Artist/Band: The Lalibelas

Name: Max Dowling

When did you start making music and why? Melbourne was blessed to have three amazing musicians from Addis Ababa come here in the last two years; they hooked up with a few of us from VCA and pretty quickly wild things started happening...

Sum up your musical sound in four words? Surprising, soulful, sassy, satisfying

If you could support any band in the world  — past or present — who would it be? Going to have the cliche answer and say Mulatu Astatke: a pioneer, legend and huge source of inspiration for us.

If you could only listen to one album forevermore, what would it be and why? Going to have to leave the Ethio-jazz vibes behind here and say The Return of Spring by Chiri. Can’t be explained, just check it out.

Greatest rock'n'roll moment of your career to date? While there were no drugs or smashed guitars involved, getting in the studio with Harry James Angus on an impromptu recording session (which turned into our debut EP) was a pretty wild time.

Why should people come and see your band? Every gig is different to the last, every one of us gives it our all, and everyone wants to dance.

When and where for your next gig? We’re playing the Coffee Fest on June 14th and the Emerge Festival at the Workers’ Club June 20th.
