Have You Heard: Mantis & The Prayer

"After experiencing a personal tragedy I became more drawn to music."

Answered by: William Parmelee

When did you start making music and why? I was around 16. After experiencing a personal tragedy I became more drawn to music, to escape and find some sort of emotional therapy. That's why I believe the music I write is quite powerful.

Sum up your musical sound in four words? Theatrical, moody, evocative, emotional.

If you could support any band in the world — past or present — who would it be? The early Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, that would be a marvel. Or perhaps The Doors pre-indecent exposure scandal.

If you could only listen to one album forevermore, what would it be and why? Smile by The Beach Boys. It is the only album that can evoke such strong feelings of elation, bittersweetness, madness and playfulness… all in one. All carefully crafted with sophistication and sonic wonder.

Greatest rock'n'roll moment of your career to date? There are some really great venues and shows I have played and I've been exposed on TV. However, these things while are great, I wouldn't say define my career. My greatest moments are captured in the songs we record... they are forever.

Why should people come and see your band? If people want to be part of a musical seance and experience our unique form of escapism, join the congregation.

When and where for your next gig? Sunday 2 Aug at The Workers Club. A matinee… A motif of magick, madness and soul. Doors at 1.30.
